The Stitcher, The Photographer & The Painter

This major 2026 exhibition at Sheringham Museum brings together the work of three artists connected to the town across different generations.

John Craske, Cecil Hewitt and Tom Armes each lived in Sheringham at various points in their lives. While they likely never met, their work forms a compelling collective story of place, creativity and resilience.

Spanning the last 50 years of Sheringham (1975–2025), the exhibition explores how each artist captured and responded to life on the North Norfolk coast in their own distinct way:

• John Craske – known for his detailed textile work, often created during periods of illness
• Cecil Hewitt – a photographer documenting coastal life and changing landscapes
• Tom Armes – a painter who settled in Sheringham later in life, drawn by its character and atmosphere

Despite very different backgrounds, all three artists shared a determination to create, often adapting their work around personal health challenges. In many ways, the exhibition is not just about their art, but about how limitations became a catalyst for creativity.
